Diamond Dead

Eräänä kauniina päivänä, tai siis pikemminkin “Eräänä synkkänä ja myrskyisenä yönä”, selatessani läpi tiedon valtateiden turhaakin turhempia sivustoja, osui silmään jotain täysin uutta. Muutaman George A. Romeron fanisivuston kautta eksyin Romeron uuden elokuvaprojektin virallisille nettisivuille (http://www.diamonddead.com). Aluksi hieman sekavalta tuntuva sivusto paljastui pienen tutkiskelun jälkeen uskomattoman omaperäiseksi projektiksi.

“George A. Romero – Director – Night of the living dead – Richard Hartley – composer – The Rocky Horror Picture Show” Ilmoittaa sivuston yläpalkki. Tässä vaiheessa uskoisi jokaisen elokuvafanaatikon mielenkiinnon heräävän.Todellisuudessa Diamond Dead on monessa suhteessa täysin originelli elokuva. Kyseessä on nimittäin maailman ensimmäinen ns. “Open source” elokuva. Käytännössä tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että kaikki elokuvan tuotantovaiheet, ensimmäisestä käsikirjoitusvedoksesta leikkausvaiheeseen, on selostettu tarkasti sivustolla. Vastaisuudessa sivustolle rekisteröityneiden on jopa mahdollista päästä mukaan elokuvan kuvauksiin.

George A. Romeron sekä Richard Hartleyn lisäksi elokuvan parissa työskentelee muun muassa kauhuskenen taustavoimana jo pitkään toiminut Brian Cooper sekä unkarilaissyntyinen, australiassa asuva indie tuottaja Andrew Gaty. Cooper on vastuussa alkuperäisestä ideasta, sekä Hartleyn säveltämien musiikkikappaleiden lyriikoista. Diamond Deadin musiikki tuleekin olemaan jotain aivan muuta kuin mihin yleisesti on totuttu. Laulujen aiheiden vaihdellessa necrofiliasta alistamiseen, vaihtelee myös musiikillinen tyyli melkoisesti.

Jonkin aikaa sitten sivustolla järjestettiin myös ainutlaatuinen tilaisuus päästä juttelemaan itse Richard Hartleyn, Brian Cooperin sekä Andrew Gatyn kanssa erikoiseen internetin välityksellä järjestettyyn suljettuun chat tilaisuuteen. Kyseessä oli Hartleyn ensimmäinen internet chat, joten tilaisuus oli todellakin varsin ainutlaatuinen.

Katkelma keskustelusta käännettynä englannista suomeksi :

Tarkkis: Richard, voisitko kenties kertoa hieman siitä miten sekaannuit mukaan tähän projektiin, ja miten työskentely Diamond Dead-ryhmän kanssa on eronnut Rocky Horror-ryhmän kanssa työskentelystä tähän mennessä?
Richard Hartley: DD on todella hauska projekti, ja Brian Cooper on todella taitava. Rocky Horrorin teossa meillä oli ryhmä: Jim Sharman, Brian Thomson sekä Sue Blane. Richard (O’Brien) ja minä olimme työskennelleet aikasemminkin yhdessä. Kaikki sujui hyvin kunnes… (hän viittaa tekijöiden riitoihin ja erimielisyyksiin)
Tarkkis: Kirjoittaako Brian Cooper laulujen sanoitukset jälkikäteen, vai sävellätkö kappaleet yhteistyössä samanaikaisesti hänen kanssaan?
Richard Hartley: Hän kirjoittaa lyriikat, sitten minä sävellän kappaleen, ja lopulta tutkimme yhdessä mikä ei toimi, ja muutamme sen.
Tarkkis: Kuulemani perusteella asiat tuntuvat toimivan todella hyvin, todella omaperäisen kuuloista materiaalia.
Tarkkis: Oletteko mahdollisesti nähneet elokuvan Melkein julkkis (Almost Famous)? He perustivat Stillwater nimisen bändin elokuvaa varten. Käsittääkseni tekin aiotte tehdä samalla tavalla?
Richard Hartley: Itseasiassa pidin elokuvasta.. tosin ehkä hieman liian rauhallinen
Tarkkis: Se onkin melko lämminhenkinen elokuva, aivan päinvastoin kuin Diamond Dead.
Tarkkis: Käsittääkseni tämä on Richardin ensimmäinen internet-chat. Mitäs olet pitänyt tilaisuudesta tähän mennessä?
Richard Hartley: Tähän saakka kaikki hyvin, harrastatko itse tätä paljonkin?
Tarkkis: hehe, joillekin (kuten minulle) on kehittynyt melkoinen addiktio erilaisista internet-chateista…
Richard Hartley: Toivon todella että saamme tämän tehtyä, olemme panostaneet jo paljon tähän projektiin, ja mielestäni on jo aika hieman omaperäisempien elokuvien päästä valkokankaille.
Tarkkis: Kiitoksia sivustomme puolesta, ja toivottavasti saatte elokuvan valmiiksi! (Keskustelun aikaan rahoitus ei ollut vielä varmistunut)

Kuten jo aikaisemmin mainitsin, ja kuten Richard Hartleyn mukanaolosta voi päätellä, musiikilla on todella suuri merkitys Diamond Dead-elokuvassa. Elokuva kertookin Diamond Dead nimisestä rock-bändistä, tosin tällä kertaa kyseessä ei ole aivan tavallinen yhtye. Kun ohjaajanpallilla istuu itse kuolleiden herra, George A. Romero, on lähes selvää että mukana on myös vivahde elävistä kuolleista. Diamond Dead-bändin jäsenet ovatkin manageria lukuunottamatta kaikki kuolleista heränneitä zombieita. Odotettavissa on siis Rock’n’Rollia, huumoria sekä satoja irtoraajoja ja verta.

Diamonddead.com sisältää todella paljon mielenkiintoisia ominaisuuksia, kuten jukeboxin, josta voi kuunnella elokuvan tulevaa musiikkia, The Script-osion, josta voit lukea elokuvan käsikirjoituksen eri vedoksia (ensimmäinen ja toinen vedos saatavilla täydessä mitassa!), Producing-osio, jossa tuottaja Andrew Gaty opastaa elokuvantekijöitä elokuvan tuottamiseen liittyvissä asioissa, sekä kyselypalsta, jonne jokainen elokuvasta kiinnostunut voi jättää elokuvaan liittyvät kysymyksensä Diamond Dead-tiimin vastausta odottelemaan (jopa yleisesti teknologiaa kammoksuva Romero vastaa kysymyksiin aktiivisesti). Itse sainkin urkittua tuottaja Andrew Gatylta sekä ohjaaja Romerolta jonkin verran tietoa elokuvaan liittyen :

Tarkkis: Arvoisa herra Romero, mikä on omasta mielestäsi paras ohjaamasi elokuva, ja miksi? Vai ajatteletko kuten David Lynch, joka ilmoittaa pitävänsä kaikista elokuvistansa yhtä paljon, lukuunottamatta Dyyni-elokuvaa (The Dune)?
George A. Romero: Pidän niistä kaikista eri tavoilla. Jokainen elokuvistani on tärkeä omalla tavallaan. Kaikki riippuu siitä minä päivänä minulta asiaa kysytään.
Tarkkis: Aikaisemmin olet työskennellyt muutamaan otteeseen legendaarisen kauhukirjailija Stephen Kingin kanssa. Oletko kenties hyväkin ystävä hänen kanssaan? Ja jos olet, kaavailetko kenties hänelle pientä cameo-roolia Diamond Deadiin? Olisi hauska nähdä suosikki ohjaajani sekä kirjailijani työskentelevän yhdessä jälleen.
George. A Romero: Steve pitää rock and roll musiikista, ja suunnittelen järjestäväni hänelle pienen cameo-roolin.
Tarkkis: Kuinka Diamond Dead-ryhmän kanssa työskentely on tähän mennessä eronnut muiden filmiryhmien kanssa työskentelystä? Ainakin sivustosta päätellen, Diamond Dead-ryhmä on melko rennon tuntuinen.
George A. Romero: Richard ja Andrew ovat hienoja tyyppejä, ja rakastan heidän kanssaan työskentelyä… Jokaisella projektilla on erilaiset ryhmät.
Tarkkis: Luin jostain (ehkä jopa teidän sivustoltanne, muistini tuppaa reistailemaan…), että et pidä uudesta teknologiasta ja monista siihen liittyvistä asioista, pitääkö tämä paikkansa?
George A. Romero: Olen vain tottunut käyttämään vanhanaikaista laitteistoa… tosin olen kyllä melko avoin uusille asioille…

Romeron fanit (minä mukaanlukien) ovat varmasti iloisia nähdessään herrän ohjaavan jälleen uutta elokuvaa, mutta tällä kertaa elokuvan uskoisi vetävän katsomoihin muitakin kuin omistautuneita fanaatikkoja. Tästä saamme kiittää elokuvaa mahdollisesti tähdittäviä näyttelijöitä, jo harkinnan alaisina ovat muun muassa supertähti muusikot kuten David Bowie, Gwen Stefani sekä Marilyn Manson (häntä on ehdotettu itse Jeesus Kristuksen rooliin). Nähtäväksi jää keitä lopulliseen näyttelijäkaartiin todella saadaan mukaan. Vähän aikaa sitten vahvistunut yhteistyö sopimus Scott Free productions-yhtiön kanssa (Ridley & Tony Scottin firma) tulee varmasti antamaan tuotannolle hyvät mahdollisuudet menestykseen ja ihmisten kiinnostuksen herättämiseen.

Diamond dead todellakin tuntuisi lunastavan hamassa tulevaisuudessa leijailevat fanien odotukset, se on todellakin omaperäisen ja hauskan tarinan sisältävä elokuva, jonka tekotapa on täysin uudenlainen. Elokuva valmistunee varmaankin vuoden 2005 loppuun mennessä, ja sitä odotellessa voi kaikkia tuontavaiheita seurata suoraan netistä. Suosittelenkin kaikkien vähänkin kiinnostuneiden siirtymistä sivustolle (vielä kerran, http://www.diamonddead.com).

One sunny afternoon, actually more like “one dark and stormy night”, as I was surfing on the small waves of the internet, I stumbled upon a wave, much bigger than the others. I think I drowned. The site I am talking about is the official site (http://www.diamonddead.com) of the upcoming Romero/Hartley/Gaty/Cooper film, Diamond Dead. I can’t really remember how I got there, but I think I got the link from some George A. Romero fansite. At first the site felt a little confusing, but after some pretty thorough surfing it turned out to be something quite original.

“George A. Romero – Director – Night of the living dead – Richard Hartley – composer – The Rocky Horror Picture Show” says the banner on the site. That should pretty much leave every movie fanatic drooling on their keyboards. The truth is, that Diamond Dead really is something completely original in many ways. This project could be described as “The world’s first open source movie”, open source in this case means that every stage of producing is documented on the site, and can be freely viewed there. This material includes stuff like the early drafts of the script, and as the production goes further, registered users can even participate the making of the movie, as an extra.

The crew of the movie includes the director George A. Romero (need I say more?), Richard Hartley (genious composer), Brian Cooper (a multitalented guy who has been working “behind the scenes” in many horror related projects) and Hungarian born Andrew Gaty, who is a known indie producer in Australia. Cooper is the one responsible for the original idea and script for this movie, and he also writes the lyrics for the musical pieces composed by Hartley. The music in the movie will be something quite different from what we’ve all been used to hear. There is a song about necrophilia, but there’s also a song about real dead musicians such as jimi hendrix etc…, and as the lyrics differ from each other quite a bit the styles change quite often too.

Couple of months ago there was a unique opportunity for registered users to chat with Richard Hartley, Brian Cooper and Andrew Gaty on a special chat. It was in fact the first internet chat that Hartley had ever participated, so it was really a special chance for fans to interview him and the others a bit.

Small excerpts from the chat:

Tarkkis: Richard: could you perhaps tell a bit how you got into this project? and how does working with the Diamond Dead group differ from working with the Rocky Horror crew so far?
richard_hartley: DD is great fun Brian Cooper is very talented, with Rocky there was a team Jim Brian T Sue B and Richard and I had worked together on other things and we worked well together until…….
Tarkkis: By the way, on the site it says the lyrics are from Brian? Does this mean he sings in the clips, or that he wrote the lyrics?
agaty: brian just wrote the lyrics
richard_hartley: He wrote the lyrics, I don’t think he sings
Tarkkis: So does he write the lyrics afterwards, or do you write the lyrics / compose the song cooperatively with him?
richard_hartley: He writes the lyrics then I write the song and then we get together to change the odd thing to make it work
Tarkkis: well, from the clips I’ve heard, things really work pretty god damn well, really original material
richard_hartley: Thanks I think we have something very exciting
Tarkkis: You guys seen the movie Almost Famous? They actually founded the band “stillwater” for that movie. Bit like you guys will do with DD I suppose?
richard_hartley: I liked Almost Famous.. perhaps a little cosy too many sweaters I guess
Tarkkis: It’s a warm movie, nothing like Diamond Dead will be.
Tarkkis: Richard: So this is your first ever internet-chat if I’m not mistaken. How has the experience been so far?
richard_hartley: So far so good you do it a lot?
Tarkkis: hehe for some people (me included) these chats are something you could describe as a drug 😛
richard_hartley: I just hope we can get this made, we have all put a lot of effort into this and I think its time for an original idea to surface from the gloom that is released these days

As I mentioned earler, and since Richard Hartley is in the project, it’s pretty obvious that music has quite big part in the whole movie. The movie actually tells about a rock band, named Diamond Dead, but this ain’t an ordinary rock band at all, actually all the band members are in fact something you might describe as zombies. And as I mentioned earlier, the director of the movie will be the maestro of all things undead, George A. Romero himself. So what can we expect? Great music, gore, humor and zombies in one single movie, what else could we possibly hope for!

Diamonddead.com has many interesting features, like a jukebox, where you can listen clips of the music composed by richard, The script-section (it should be pretty obvious whats in there), Producing-section, where the producer Andrew Gaty gives good tips to those who intend to make a movie, and a Q&A-section, where anyone can ask a question from any of the makers of this film or the site. Unlike in many other sites, here the makers actually reply, no matter how stupid the question might be. I myself have sent quite a few questions to mr. Romero and Gaty, and usually I’ve gotten the reply within a few days.

I managed to get some info about the movie via the q&a section: Tarkkis: Mr. Romero, I was just wondering which of the films you’ve directed, do you consider as the best one? and why? Or is it something like with David Lynch, who says he loves all his movies equally, except for The Dune?
George A. Romero: I like them all in different ways. Each of them are special in a certain way. It depends which day you ask me this question.
Tarkkis: You have previously worked a couple of times with the legendary horror writer Stephen King. Are you perhaps good friends with him? And if you are, could you perhaps have him appear on Diamond Dead for a quick cameo? Just wondering, because you have pretty much always been my favorite director, and King has always been my favorite author, so it would be nice to see you guys team up again somehow.
George A. Romero: Steve is into rock and roll and I am planning to have him in Diamond Dead in a cameo.
Tarkkis: How has working with the Diamond Dead- crew been different from from working with the crews of your previous movies? From what I can tell, Diamond dead-team seems to bequite relaxed, compared to other movie-making teams.
George A. Romero: Richard and Andrew are great guys and I love working with them… The people on every project are different.
Tarkkis: I read somewhere (I think it was on this site. Can’t really remember, my memory is like a dalmatian… black spot there and another one here) that you hate (maybe dislike would be a better term) technology and many things related to it, is this correct? And why is that?
George A. Romero: I am just used to be working with film… (note: there has been some talk about shooting diamond dead digitally). but I do have an open mind…

For dedicated Romero fanatcis (me included) it’s great to see him directing a new movie, but this film will surely draw many non-Romero fanatics into the theaters as well. There has been talk about getting many known faces from popculture to act in couple of roles. Among these people are such superstars as David Bowie, Gwen Stefani and Marilyn Manson (he is being considered for the role of Jesus Christ!). It remains to be seen how many of these people end up in the final movie. The recent addenum for the producing team, Scott Free productions (the production company of Tony & Ridley Scott), is sure to provide good chances for gaining peoples interest.

It seems like Diamond dead will eventually keep all the promises it has given us: it truly will be an original movie, with extremely funny story. The film is currently in pre-production stage, so it will hopefully be finished in couple of years. Until that, we can all be a part of this project, by submitting our ideas on the site, and simply by just observing the film/site as it is being made.
